In short: open a character, tap Message, and start talking. Chatting is free. Characters remember you, can text you first, and send photos and videos as you talk.
Start a chat
Step 1. Pick a character in Discovery and open them.
Step 2. Look through their profile: photos, a short bio, and the About tab.
Step 3. Tap Message and say hi.
The first time you open a chat, the character greets you with a free photo from their profile.
Photos and videos in the chat
There's no special button for content. Characters offer photos and videos naturally as you talk, and you can also just ask. New content arrives blurred, and you choose what to unlock.
See Photos, videos, and credits for how it works.
How characters remember you
What they remember: your recent messages and key facts about you, like your name, your job, and your interests.
Long chats: older parts are kept as a short summary, so small details from far back can slip.
Separate memories: what you tell one character, the others don't know.
A character forgot something? A quick reminder in the chat usually does the trick.
Characters who text first
You don't always have to start the conversation. Characters can text you first, so sometimes a new message will be waiting for you when you come back.
You can turn on browser notifications to see new messages right away. To turn them off, change the notification settings for the site in your browser.
What you can do in the chat
Sending a lot of messages very quickly? You may need to wait a moment before sending more.
Hide or delete a chat
Both options are in the chat menu, and both ask you to confirm. Here's the difference:
If you delete a chat with paid content that hadn't arrived yet, those credits come back to your balance. A new chat with the same character starts from scratch.
Before you delete: after a chat is deleted, the photos and videos you bought in it stay only in My Generations. If you remove them there too, they're gone for good and can't be restored.

A character texts me too often
Characters only write first during the day and no more than a few times a day, and they write less if you don't reply. If you'd like a character to stop texting you, delete that chat (this can't be undone). A hidden chat comes back to your list when the character writes again. Browser notifications can be turned off in your browser's site settings.
A character sent two messages in a row

That's normal and doesn't affect the chat. Just keep the conversation going.

Safety and privacy
All characters are AI. They're adults (18+) and fictional.
Your chats are private. Other users can't see your conversations or your own characters.
Content rules. Some requests can't be generated because of our content rules. If a photo doesn't come through for that reason, it's not something you did wrong.
